Commonly referred to as “The Nikkei,” the JPN 225 is a Japanese index based on the market capitalisation of the top 225 companies traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE). The Nikkei is a price-weighted index calculated daily since 1950 by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Japan’s largest financial newspaper. The Nikkei operates in the Japanese Yen and displays a positive correlation to the value of the currency. When the Yen depreciates, prices of Japanese stocks listed on the index rise. Overall the Nikkei is popular for its day-to-day volatility.
